Severe storms in India's Uttar Pradesh cause nearly 90 deaths

On Wednesday, a severe storm system brought rain, hail, and lightning to the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, resulting in 89 confirmed deaths. According to the state’s relief commissioner, an additional 53 people sustained injuries during the weather events. The storm caused significant infrastructure damage, with 87 homes destroyed and 114 head of livestock killed. Fatalities were primarily caused by falling trees and collapsing structural walls. Local media captured footage of uprooted billboards and trees crushing vehicles. In response, the state government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, ordered officials to provide immediate aid and distribute financial assistance to survivors within 24 hours. Storms of this nature are a common occurrence in northern India during the pre-monsoon heat season, which spans from March to June.
