Road worker critically injured on Limassol-Paphos highway
On Thursday morning at approximately 9:40 AM, a 24-year-old worker was critically injured while performing road maintenance near Sotira on the Limassol-Paphos motorway. A 37-year-old driver struck the worker after hitting a warning sign and illuminated flashing arrow; the victim was later transferred to Nicosia General Hospital in critical condition. Some reports indicate a second worker sustained minor injuries, though official reports focus on the critically injured individual. The driver, who tested positive for cocaine in a preliminary narcotics test, was arrested and is under investigation by Limassol traffic police. During questioning, the driver claimed he was distracted while reaching for a water bottle that had fallen to the floor of his vehicle and failed to notice the warning signs. Police are currently investigating whether the work site signage complied with public works department requirements, noting the incident occurred on a curve. The driver was released pending further laboratory analysis of his samples.
