Cyprus and France strengthen military cooperation
Following a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Cyprus on April 24, both nations announced plans to sign a Status of Forces Agreement in June. This agreement is expected to authorize the presence of French military personnel on the island. The cooperation framework also includes provisions for joint military exercises, defense industry collaboration, technology transfers, and training programs. While the Cypriot government describes these measures as efforts to strengthen national security through strategic alliances, Turkish columnist Hüseyin Işıksal has criticized the move. Işıksal argues in the Daily Sabah that these developments, along with partnerships with the United States and Israel, are directed against Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. Furthermore, the commentary suggests that these alliances are intended to exclude Turkey from regional energy and diplomatic equations. The Cypriot administration maintains that its foreign policy seeks to ensure stability, whereas critics claim it creates unnecessary regional tensions.
