Demolition of abandoned 14-story building underway in Limassol

The demolition of a prominent 14-story abandoned building on Omonoias Avenue in Limassol has commenced. The project, formerly known as the Maritime Building and owned by Pieris Estates, remained unfinished after construction began between 1976 and 1977 due to the company's financial difficulties. For nearly five decades, the site became a hazardous structure, a source of criminal activity, and a site for squatters, necessitating city interventions for cleaning and safety. The Limassol EOA (Provincial Administration Organization) issued the formal demolition permit following consultations regarding the building's height and proximity to the public road. Specialized machinery imported from abroad is being used to conduct the demolition according to a technical methodology submitted to the EOA. The cleared land is reportedly intended for a new development project. The structure had recently faced issues with structural integrity and a fire involving discarded tires.
