AKEL general secretary reviews parliamentary achievements
On Thursday, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou held a press conference to review the party's parliamentary accomplishments over the past five years. Stefanou categorized these achievements into four main sectors: labor, social protection and human rights, economy and energy, and environmental issues. In the labor sector, he highlighted improvements in employee safety training, protection from exhausting working conditions, and the rights of indefinite-term teachers. Social reforms included free legal aid for victims of gender-based and domestic violence, the criminalization of revenge pornography, and the extension of maternity and parental leave from 18 to 24 weeks. Regarding the economy, the party advocated for a reduction of VAT on electricity to 5% and the suspension of green taxes. Stefanou also noted environmental policy successes, such as the constitutional protection of a sustainable environment and a ban on photovoltaic installations on fertile agricultural land. Finally, he stated that the party has not ruled out the possibility of claiming the Presidency of the House of Representatives.
