AKEL party outlines election priorities and economic proposals

AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou announced that the party is entering the final phase of its election campaign, focusing on the dichotomy between supporting the broader society and benefiting the wealthy. During a tour in Geroskipou, Stefanou emphasized that the party maintains constant contact with citizens to address issues such as inflation, the housing crisis, and banking practices. Referring to a European Commission report, he proposed a 2% tax on assets exceeding one billion euros in Cyprus, which he estimates could generate 800 million euros in annual revenue. Stefanou stated that the party aims to surpass its 2021 legislative election result of 22% to strengthen its influence in the new parliament. He expressed openness to discussing the candidacy for the presidency of the House of Representatives, clarifying that this issue is independent of the 2028 presidential elections. Stefanou argued that AKEL's policies are designed to support workers, the middle class, and pensioners. He noted that the party has consistently used its legislative capacity to advocate for social policies and income growth.
