Cyprus implements new measures to reduce rising road fatalities

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced that Cyprus is intensifying efforts to curb road fatalities, particularly among drivers under 24, who account for over a quarter of annual deaths. Statistics indicate that 15 people have died on Cypriot roads so far this year, an increase of two compared to the same period last year. Of these fatalities, seven were motorcyclists, with reports suggesting up to six of them may not have been wearing helmets. Other victims included four car drivers, one passenger, two pedestrians, and one e-scooter rider. The government’s Strategic Action Plan, running until 2030, aims to halve road deaths through 28 policy initiatives and 158 individual measures. Proposed actions include stricter probationary licenses, tougher penalties for traffic offenses, and 30 km/h speed zones in cities. Additionally, the government plans to audit vehicle inspection centers and mechanics to ensure compliance with maintenance standards. Officials identified excessive speed, drug and alcohol impairment, and driver distraction as primary contributors to the accidents.
