Attorney General Giorgos Savvides addresses newly registered lawyers in Nicosia
On Thursday, Attorney General Giorgos Savvides delivered an address during a ceremony for newly registered lawyers at the Supreme Court in Nicosia. He warned against the dangers of public cynicism and the trend of using social media to facilitate trial by public opinion. Savvides emphasized that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should not be conflated with the indiscriminate disparagement of democratic institutions. He urged the new legal professionals to maintain critical thinking and to be cautious of polarization, misinformation, and the rapid adoption of conclusions without proper study. According to the Attorney General, such trends undermine the trust of citizens in state institutions and the justice system. He cautioned that restoring public trust is a necessity, but it cannot be achieved through populism or destructive rhetoric. The address concluded with a reminder of the duty lawyers have as both legal practitioners and responsible citizens to defend ethical standards and the rule of law.
