Cyprus upgrades surveillance systems along the Green Line
Over the past three years, Cyprus has implemented a significant upgrade to its surveillance capabilities along the 180-kilometer Green Line. The Ministry of Defence and the police, coordinated by the National Guard, have installed modern cameras and audiovisual equipment to ensure 24-hour monitoring. Most of the previously installed barbed wire has been removed, with exceptions made for areas where difficult terrain, such as ravines, prevents physical dismantling. The National Guard maintains close operational cooperation with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Liaison officers from both sides coordinate responses whenever the surveillance systems detect suspicious movement. Certain locations remain difficult to supervise fully, including the village of Pyla, which operates under a special UN regime without formal checkpoints, and areas near Avlona due to geographical challenges. Officials stated that security protocols are continuously refined to improve the effectiveness and immediacy of monitoring.
