US monitors 41 individuals following Andes hantavirus outbreak on luxury cruise ship
As of Thursday, U.S. health officials report no confirmed cases of the Andes hantavirus within the United States. However, 41 individuals are under active monitoring, including 18 people currently in quarantine in Nebraska and Atlanta. The monitoring period for these individuals is six weeks, or 42 days, during which they are advised to remain at home. This group includes passengers who returned to the U.S. before the outbreak was identified, as well as travelers who may have been exposed on flights with symptomatic individuals. The virus, which is primarily spread by rodents but can occasionally transmit between humans, originated in early May aboard the luxury expedition ship MV Hondius. The outbreak has resulted in three deaths, specifically a Dutch couple and a German national. The CDC and the World Health Organization suggest that while further cases linked to this cluster are expected, the situation is not comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic.
