Discussions ongoing between Ministry of Education and POED regarding school safety documentation
The Ministry of Education in Cyprus is considering the introduction of an additional health and safety assessment form for public schools. Following an April 3rd meeting with Marios Panagidis, the General Director of the Ministry, the teachers' union POED was asked to evaluate the potential implementation of this new form. The Ministry proposes pilot testing the documentation in two schools, one with a high number of students and one with a low number. POED has expressed willingness to discuss the proposal further but maintains that any additional administrative duties must be compensated with dedicated non-teaching time. Specifically, the union is demanding at least two teaching periods per week to manage the required weekly updates. Separately, POED has raised concerns regarding the clarity of evaluation processes for seconded teachers as a new system is scheduled for implementation in September. The union is calling for transparent and functional procedures for these staff members.
