High-level discussion on road safety for young drivers in Cyprus
A high-level discussion on road safety was held in Cyprus by the Police Traffic Department and the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) to address the high number of fatalities among young drivers. Data presented indicates that 120 people died in road collisions between 2023 and 2025, with 34 deaths in 2023, 41 in 2024, and 45 in 2025. Approximately half of these victims were under 24 years old. According to ETSC representative Jenny Carson, Cyprus ranked third in Europe for youth road deaths in 2023, with young people representing 27% of all traffic fatalities compared to the EU average of 18%. Additionally, 725 people were seriously injured and 1,349 slightly injured during the same three-year period. Statistics show 61% of fatal accidents occur in urban areas, with motorcyclists accounting for nearly 30% of total deaths. The Ministry of Transport aims to reduce annual road fatalities to 26 by 2030, citing speed, alcohol, and drug use as primary contributing factors.
