Environmental department investigates unauthorized construction in Natura 2000 area

The Department of Environment has intervened following the discovery of unauthorized construction works in the 'Cha Potami' Natura 2000 protected area near the Gerovasa community of Trozena. An inspection conducted on May 11, 2026, revealed that projects, including a restaurant, café, and reception area, were completed without the necessary permits. Between 2023 and 2025, six separate applications had been submitted for various structures, including a car park, house, winery, and nature trail. Inspectors also noted significant land leveling and vegetation clearance across the site. In an urgent letter dated May 14, 2026, Deputy Director Elena Stylianopoulou instructed the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) to evaluate all interventions collectively under a single Master Plan. The DLGO is required to assess the unauthorized work and apply relevant legislation as the competent authority. A meeting involving all stakeholders has been scheduled to address the environmental violations.
