Five Italian divers die in Maldives cave diving accident

Five Italian nationals died during a deep-sea diving excursion in the Maldives on Thursday morning. The group was exploring underwater caves at a depth of approximately 60 meters near the Vaavu Atoll when they failed to resurface, prompting an emergency search. The victims have been identified as marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, her 21-year-old daughter Giorgia, dive instructor Gianluca Benedetti, and biologists Muriel Odino and Federico Gualtieri. Authorities confirmed that one body, later identified as Gianluca Benedetti, was recovered from the cave, while recovery efforts for the remaining four victims were temporarily suspended due to severe weather conditions and strong winds. The group had been on a private diving cruise near Alimathaa when the incident occurred under adverse meteorological conditions. Local authorities and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deaths, and an investigation into the exact causes of the tragedy is currently underway.
