Five Italian divers die in Maldives diving accident
Five Italian citizens died during a diving excursion in the Maldives on Thursday near the Vaavu Atoll. The group, which included a diving instructor and a researcher, failed to resurface by midday, prompting a search and rescue operation. Authorities later located the bodies inside an underwater cave at a depth reportedly between 50 and 60 meters. The victims have been identified as Monica Montefalcone, her 20-year-old daughter, Muriel Odentino, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri. Reports indicate that adverse weather conditions and a yellow weather warning were in effect at the time of the dive. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the deaths. Local police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the exact cause of the tragedy. Sources differ slightly on the depth and specific details of the recovery, but all confirm the loss of all five individuals.
