Five Italian tourists die during diving excursion in the Maldives

Five Italian tourists lost their lives on Thursday during a diving excursion near the Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives. The group, which included a renowned marine biologist from the University of Genoa, Monica Montefalcone, and her 20-year-old daughter, went missing after failing to resurface from a morning dive near Alimathaa. Other identified victims are Muriel Odenino, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri. Search and rescue teams located the bodies inside an underwater cave at a depth of approximately 60 meters. Local authorities confirmed that adverse weather conditions and a yellow weather warning were in effect for the region at the time. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the fatalities, while local police have launched an investigation into the precise circumstances of the accident. Reports indicate the group was on a privately operated dive cruise boat when the incident occurred.
