Cyprus municipal union and animal welfare groups oppose 2026 dog law amendments
The Union of Municipalities of Cyprus has expressed opposition to the 2026 amendments to the Dogs Law, stating that post-approval changes weakened or abolished key modernizing provisions. The Union argues that the current framework is outdated and fails to meet modern enforcement needs, calling for an immediate review of the legislation. The Cyprus Animal Protection Society (CAPS) has criticized the changes as being influenced by political interests. In response, CAPS is organizing a public protest to take place outside the Parliament on Saturday, May 16, at 11:00 am. The organization is encouraging citizens to attend the demonstration with their dogs and signage to protest against animal abuse and abandonment. The protests aim to pressure lawmakers to adopt a more effective and modern regulatory framework for animal welfare.
