Cyprus defense ministry announces infrastructure upgrades and five-year investment plan
Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas announced plans to upgrade naval and air infrastructure in Cyprus during the graduation ceremony of the 86th Underwater Demolition Team at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Mari. The government intends to utilize 1.18 billion euros from the European Union's SAFE program over the next five years. This funding is allocated to address specific defense needs and improve the country's contribution to European security systems. The minister stated that these upgrades are intended to bolster the National Guard's deterrent capabilities and support the country's role in humanitarian missions and crisis management in the Eastern Mediterranean. Additionally, the plan includes strengthening defense diplomacy through expanded partnerships with European allies. These initiatives serve to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.
