Court denies legal aid to detained Cameroonian national

Judge L. Demetriadou-Andreou has denied a request for free legal aid submitted by Brian Ozimba Adi, a Cameroonian national currently in detention pending deportation. The applicant sought legal assistance to file a Habeas Corpus petition to challenge the lawfulness of his detention. The court ruled that the application failed to meet the statutory criteria required under the Legal Aid Law, noting that the applicant merely cited a lack of financial resources. According to the case history, the applicant first applied for international protection in 2018, which was rejected in 2021 by the Asylum Service. Subsequent appeals to the Administrative Court of International Protection and later asylum applications were also unsuccessful. In 2025, Mr. Adi was arrested in Nicosia for illegal stay, leading to the issuance of detention and deportation orders. These orders were upheld by the Administrative Court in November 2025, with periodic re-evaluations of his detention conducted throughout 2025 and 2026.
