Electricity Authority of Cyprus awaits regulatory clarity on residential solar energy surpluses

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has adopted a wait-and-see approach regarding the compensation for energy surpluses produced by residential photovoltaic systems. EAC Chairman Giorgos Petrou stated that the authority has not yet initiated any compensation processes because the final form of the legislation remains unclear. In late March 2026, the EAC reset energy balances for all residential solar systems as per previous practices. However, in April 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides referred a bill back to Parliament concerning renewable energy promotion. Subsequently, the House of Representatives partially accepted the President's referral, deciding that household energy surpluses should not be deleted but instead preserved. These surpluses are currently held in suspense until the Council of Ministers defines the specific management and compensation procedures. The authority continues to wait for official government guidance to finalize its policy.
