Nicosia court sentences social welfare officials in Stylianou case

On May 15, 2026, the Nicosia District Court issued suspended sentences to two social welfare service officials regarding the 2019 suicide of 14-year-old Stylianou Konstantinou. The defendants were among eleven people facing charges related to the case. Both officials pleaded guilty to intentional neglect of official duty, a violation of Article 134 of the Penal Code. The first defendant received a ten-month suspended prison sentence for three counts of neglect occurring between March and December 2011, during which time they failed to protect the child from physical violence and neglect. The second defendant was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for three years, for failing to investigate the child's living conditions between July 2014 and September 2016. The court noted that mitigating factors were considered during sentencing. These two individuals are the first to be convicted in the ongoing broader case.
