Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visits Cyprus to strengthen bilateral ties
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived in Cyprus on May 17, 2026, for an official visit aimed at elevating bilateral relations. This marks the first visit by an Italian Prime Minister to the country in 36 years, following a meeting between the two leaders in Rome last February. President Nikos Christodoulides and Prime Minister Meloni are scheduled to discuss the creation of a formal partnership document and a strategic roadmap for future cooperation. Key agenda topics include defense and security, both bilaterally and within the four-party framework involving Greece, France, Cyprus, and Italy. Discussions will also cover energy cooperation, focusing on the role of the Italian company ENI in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone. Additionally, the leaders are set to address digital connectivity, trade—with Italy currently serving as Cyprus's third-largest trading partner—tourism, and cultural exchange. Regional stability, the conflict in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and the migration crisis are also part of the talks. The Prime Minister is also expected to visit the Green Line at Ledra Street during her stay.
