Italian Prime Minister Meloni visits Cyprus to strengthen bilateral ties
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is visiting Cyprus on May 17, 2026, marking the first bilateral visit by an Italian head of government in 36 years. The visit aims to transition bilateral relations to a more structured level through a formal partnership document and a specific political and operational roadmap. Cypriot Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that discussions between President Nikos Christodoulides and Meloni will focus on defense, security, energy, digital connectivity, trade, tourism, and culture. A key topic is the Italian energy firm ENI's presence in Cyprus's exclusive economic zone and regional connectivity via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. The program includes private and expanded talks, followed by a press conference and a visit to the Green Line on Ledra Street. This visit builds on previous discussions held in Rome and follows a historic visit by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
