Cypriot students win EU-CONEXUS green innovation competition
Students from Panos Ioannou Gymnasium of Kokkinochoria and Ayios Georgios Lyceum of Lakatamia secured first and second place, respectively, in the EU-CONEXUS 'Think Smart, Create Green!' competition. The event is held annually across nine European countries to promote sustainability and green solutions. The winning team, 'Scarto' from the Panos Ioannou Gymnasium, comprised students Theodora Georgiou, Maria Antoniou, Antigoni Alexandrou, and Michalis Charalambous, led by teachers Theofanis Petroudis and Therapon Therapontos. Competing in the 12-14 age category, the team designed a sandal made from recycled waste, including apple and potato peels, vegetable-based dyes, wine corks, and discarded tennis balls. The project used water collected from air conditioning units for the material processing. Frederick University, a member of the EU-CONEXUS network, served as the local organizer and source for the announcement.
