EAC makes down payment for new generators and energy storage projects
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has paid a 9 million euro advance to Siemens for the purchase of three industrial-type generators to upgrade the Dhekelia power plant. According to EAC Chairman Giorgos Petrou, the units are scheduled for delivery in April 2028, August 2028, and May 2029. These new generators offer rapid grid synchronization within five minutes, allowing for more flexible operations compared to the existing units that must be retired by December 31, 2029. To support the transition, the EAC has ordered an 80-megawatt battery energy storage system for Dhekelia, expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2027. Furthermore, the authority is planning a 100-megawatt storage project at Moni, which is currently undergoing the permitting process. A study is also underway for a 250-megawatt battery installation at the Vasiliko plant.
