Iranian Foreign Minister discusses diplomatic challenges and maritime security at BRICS summit
During the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran remains skeptical of U.S. intentions regarding peace negotiations. While acknowledging receipt of U.S. messages indicating a willingness to continue talks, Araghchi cited contradictory statements from American officials as a major obstacle. The ceasefire, in effect since April 8 following nearly 40 days of hostilities, persists but negotiations mediated by Pakistan are currently struggling. Araghchi reiterated that there is no military solution to the conflict and emphasized Iran's stance of self-defense. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the minister clarified that the waterway remains open to friendly vessels, though it is restricted for ships deemed hostile or involved in the conflict. Disputes over Iran's nuclear ambitions and control of the strait continue to complicate the diplomatic process. Araghchi stressed that while the mediation process is difficult, it has not officially collapsed.
