Eurostat report on exposure to hateful online content in 2025
In 2025, Eurostat released data indicating that 42.3% of internet users in the European Union were exposed to hostile or derogatory online content. This figure marks an increase from 36.57% in 2023, based on data from 20 reporting countries. Cyprus recorded a rate of 38.98%, slightly up from 38.45% in 2023 and remaining below the EU average. The highest prevalence of such content was reported in Hungary at 60.9%, Finland at 56.7%, and Slovakia at 56.2%. Conversely, the lowest rates were noted in Latvia at 29.3%, Greece at 29.4%, Germany at 33.7%, and Lithuania at 33.8%. Targeted hostility was most frequently attributed to political or social views (33.7%), followed by racial or ethnic background (25.5%), sexual orientation (23.4%), and religion (22.8%). Smaller percentages of users reported targeting based on gender (16.9%) and disability (11.5%).
