Eurostat reports on online hostility levels in 2025
According to Eurostat data released in 2025, 38.98% of internet users in Cyprus encountered hostile or derogatory online messages, a slight increase from 38.45% in 2023. This figure remains below the European Union average, which climbed to 42.3% from 36.57% in 2023. The EU average is calculated based on data from 20 reporting member states. Hungary, Finland, and Slovakia reported the highest levels of online hostility, exceeding 50%. Conversely, Latvia, Greece, Germany, and Lithuania recorded the lowest percentages. Targets of such content were primarily identified based on political or social views (33.7%), followed by race or ethnicity (25.5%), sexual orientation (23.4%), religion (22.8%), gender (16.9%), and disability (11.5%). The data reflects a broader upward trend in digital aggression across the European Union.
