Ebola outbreak reported in Democratic Republic of the Congo
A new outbreak of Ebola has been confirmed in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Health officials report 246 suspected cases and at least 65 deaths, including four laboratory-confirmed fatalities. The outbreak is primarily affecting the towns of Mongwalu and Ruwambara. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is organizing a high-level meeting with officials from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan to improve cross-border monitoring and response. Initial findings suggest that the current strain is not the Zaire Ebola virus, for which vaccines are available, and genetic sequencing is underway to identify the specific type. Concerns remain high due to the high population mobility in mining areas and urban centers in the region, which complicates containment efforts. This is the 16th time the country has faced an Ebola outbreak since the virus was first identified there in 1976.
