Four new outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease confirmed in Cyprus
Cyprus Veterinary Services announced four additional outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease on the evening of May 15, 2026, bringing the total number of affected livestock units to 116. The new cases were identified in the Dromolaxia and Athienou areas, involving a total of 2,765 sheep and goats. Among these new cases, one facility was noted as an unlicensed operation with seven animals, while 2,758 animals were identified across the three licensed units. Authorities clarified that all new cases are located within previously declared infected zones and are part of ongoing surveillance efforts. While reports have varied regarding the specific distribution of the units, officials confirmed that sampling continues on a nationwide basis. Other statistics mentioned in related reports indicate a broader impact on livestock including cows and pigs, though recent updates focus on the immediate count within these four specific units. The government aims to expedite compensation payments to affected farmers as the situation develops.
