Diplomatic missions in Cyprus call for national LGBT strategy
On Friday, 26 diplomatic missions and European institutions in Cyprus issued a joint statement ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). The signatories expressed concern over a global trend of restricting LGBT rights, including limitations on freedom of expression, inclusive education, and civil society activities. The missions urged the Cypriot government to finalize and adopt a national LGBT equality strategy. They highlighted Cyprus’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council for 2025–2027 and its current presidency of the Council of the European Union as opportunities to demonstrate commitment to human rights. The statement formally recognized the work of local organizations such as Accept – LGBTI Cyprus, Queer Cyprus Association, Rainbow Families Cyprus, Queer Wave, and Queer Collective. Additionally, the missions encouraged employers to implement diversity training and inclusive workplace policies. The Diplomats for Equality network announced plans to participate in Nicosia Pride marches scheduled for May 17 and June 6, 2026.
