Authorities investigate suspected cyberattacks on US gas station fuel systems

U.S. officials are investigating a series of cyberattacks targeting Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG) systems at gas stations across multiple states. According to reports cited by CNN, hackers gained unauthorized access by exploiting systems that were connected to the internet without password protection. The intrusions allowed attackers to manipulate the digital displays indicating fuel levels, although the actual physical fuel quantities remained unchanged. While no physical damage or injuries have been reported, experts and officials have expressed concerns that such access could potentially be used to conceal fuel leaks. Iran is considered the primary suspect due to its history of similar cyber operations. However, authorities caution that a definitive attribution may be difficult as the perpetrators did not leave clear digital signatures. Both the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI have been linked to the ongoing monitoring of the situation, though the FBI has declined to provide official comments.
