Death of Lazar, a 30-year-old dog

Lazar, a Papillon breed dog believed to be 30 years and five months old, died on Thursday near Annecy in southeastern France. Born on December 4, 1995, he was widely regarded as potentially the world's oldest dog. Following the death of his original owner, Lazar was sheltered at an animal sanctuary in Annecy-Marlioz. One month ago, he was adopted by 29-year-old Ophélie Boudot, who initially sought a companion animal for her mother but chose to keep him herself. Despite suffering from blindness, deafness, and physical decline, he was noted for his affectionate personality. His owner reported that he passed away peacefully in her arms. Records from the shelter confirm his birth date and history after being found beside his deceased original owner.
