Customs authorities seize fuel from truck at Agios Dometios crossing

On May 16, 2026, customs officers at the Agios Dometios crossing point performed a routine check on a tractor-trailer truck. During the inspection, they discovered 200 liters of diesel fuel that had been purchased in the occupied northern areas of Cyprus. The Greek-Cypriot driver admitted to refueling at a gas station located in those areas. Customs officials subsequently confiscated the fuel and the truck itself. The case was resolved through an out-of-court settlement, with the driver agreeing to pay an 800-euro fine to recover his vehicle. The Customs Department issued a reminder that refueling commercial vehicles in the occupied territories is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, they clarified that private vehicles are not permitted to transport additional fuel containers beyond the capacity of the vehicle's own fuel tank, citing non-compliance with relevant European Union directives regarding fuel transportation.
