Supporters of suspended Bishop Tychikos protest at the archbishopric
On Saturday, approximately 100 supporters of the suspended Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, gathered outside the Archbishopric in Nicosia. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Archbishop George, the retention of the existing Church Statute, and the reinstatement of Tychikos to his throne. This protest occurred ahead of an upcoming Holy Synod meeting scheduled for Monday, which is expected to discuss amendments to the Church Statute regarding the election of new metropolitans. Organizers clarified that they represent themselves and are not acting under the instruction of the suspended cleric. Tychikos is currently involved in a dispute with the Church hierarchy, including a recent incident at St. Paul’s church in Paphos where he was barred from participating in a liturgy. Tychikos claims he was removed from the church by force, while church authorities maintain that he is prohibited from performing duties due to his suspension. The matter is currently under police investigation, and the suspended bishop has indicated he may seek legal recourse through the Supreme Court to annul the Synod's decisions.
