Wes Streeting announces leadership bid against Keir Starmer
Former UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced on Saturday his intention to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party. Streeting resigned from his cabinet position on Thursday, citing a loss of confidence in Starmer following the party's poor performance in the local elections held on May 7. Speaking at a Progress group conference, the 43-year-old politician emphasized the need for a competitive leadership contest. He stated that those capable of leading should be prepared to present their ideas against opponents. While Streeting did not confirm whether he possesses the necessary signatures to trigger a formal contest, he claimed to have support within the parliamentary party. He noted that he chose to resign rather than further destabilize the government, as an rushed contest without inclusive candidacy would lack legitimacy. Several other ministers reportedly resigned this week due to unheeded private concerns regarding the Prime Minister's leadership.
