Turkey proposes new NATO military fuel pipeline extension
Following pressure from NATO to expand its fuel pipeline infrastructure, Turkey has proposed constructing a new connection extending from Turkey through Bulgaria to Romania. This initiative aims to address a long-standing gap in the NATO Pipeline System (NPS), which currently terminates in Germany, leaving eastern flank members without a dedicated ground-based fuel supply network. The NPS, established during the Cold War, spans approximately 10,000 kilometers across 12 countries with a total storage capacity of 4.1 million cubic meters. The Turkish proposal is reportedly intended to complement ongoing efforts by Poland and Romania to bolster the alliance's logistical reach. Anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg suggest a decision regarding the project could be reached before or during the upcoming NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara. The infrastructure connects storage facilities, air bases, refineries, and distribution hubs, ensuring the operational readiness of allied forces in the region.
