Cyprus to unveil national monument for the Pontic Greek genocide
On May 19, 2026, a new national monument dedicated to the victims of the Pontic Greek genocide will be officially unveiled in Paralimni, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides is scheduled to attend the ceremony and deliver the keynote address. The monument, sculpted by George Kikotis in Thessaloniki, was commissioned following a proposal by the Nikos Kapetanidis Action Association. Its installation fulfills a government pledge aimed at promoting international recognition of the genocide. In addition to the monument, the Cypriot government has announced broader initiatives to support this cause. These include providing university scholarships for international studies, establishing May 19 as a day of remembrance in schools, and providing state-owned space for a research and information center focused on the genocide. The project aims to preserve historical memory and support ongoing efforts for international recognition of the events.
